Persisting drought causes shortage of drinking water in Saramaccan area

Water levels of the Suriname River in the Upper Suriname district have  decreased to the point where the Saramaccan population on the area fears its supply of fresh drinking water, and consequently, the health of tens of thousands of people.

The decrease in water level comes as the result of persisting high temperatures in Suriname.

In a statement to the press, Health secretary Celsius Waterberg has announced that the government will take measures to redeem the situation.
